Succeed in Math by Playing Educational Games

Everyone wants the best for their kids and unfortunately, math is a weak area for many children. However, you can help your child succeed in math by playing educational games with them. It really is simple. Kids learn better when they are having fun. The opportunities present themselves all the time, all you have to do is take hold of the opportunity and use it to your advantage. Here are five ways you can use games to your advantage.

Educational Games in the Car:

Each day you take your child to school or the daycare. On the way to school, you can allow your child to play educational games on an iPod. The handheld device is easily portable and can be stored in your purse. The games can be downloaded from iTunes at a reasonable price and some are even free.

It is not recommended you allow your child to take the iPod to school or daycare. Many times the device is not allowed in schools and they can easily be lost or stolen. However, they can be kept with you and be used on the return ride home for additional education.

Education while Shopping:

Depending on the age of the child, have your child keep a running total of the items bought. They can either use a calculator or use their head. For a more advanced calculation, have them estimate the anticipated tax.

Make this a game by seeing who can come closest to the actual total. Younger children like matching items on lists to items in the store.

Education while Cooking:

Children can learn valuable math lessons while preparing dinner as cooking is full of counting, measuring and fractions. Cooking can be full of singing and dancing and so many games that are hard to mention.

My classroom actually had “WOO HOO Wednesday.” Rarely did anyone miss WOO HOO Wednesday. Kids just love cooking. Make it a game and your kids’ math will improve.

More Education Games Online

Sometimes you just want to go online and download some games for your kids. I get that. I have even done that. Kids are kids and they want to play computer games like all the other kids. They want to be “cool” and play the “cool computer games” like all the other kids. That is fine but you want to make sure your kids are playing games that are safe. This is what you look for:

Games that reward accomplishments Games that are developmentally appropriate Games that are age appropriate Games you can adjust the levels Visually stimulating Fun animation

Most games will teach your child something. The question then becomes, is the game your child playing teaching your child the things you want your child to learn.

The Beowulf Workout: High Intensity Interval Strength Training

High Intensity Interval Strength Training: A Workout of Epic Proportion

“Beowulf”

In a legendary time of Heroes the mighty warrior Beowulf was the most prolific of all. He was proficient by Sea and Land; he possessed strength, speed, and power; his character was forged through trial and tribulation.

He now has a workout worthy of his name.

It might be the Toughest Workout you’ll ever do!

“Beowulf”

For Time:

Run 800 meters

50 Ring Dips

100 Pullups

Run 800 meters

Row 1,000 Meters on the Concept 2 rower

This workout is a potent blend of two classic cardio modalities the Row and Run; two bodyweight strength movements in the ring dip and pullup; and a speed/power exercise in jumping slamball. You work as fast as possible to get through each of the movements – Keep track of your final time.

You are highly encouraged and quite frankly supposed to partition your Ring Dips, Pullups, and Jumping Slamball in order to move rapidly through the workout and keep the intensity high:

Run 800 meters

*10 rounds* (5 Ring Dips, 10 Pullups. 15 Jumping Slamball)

Run 800 meters

Row 1,000 Meters on the Concept 2 rower

Partitioning the movements is much more demanding metabolically and will improve your conditioning noticeably.

How To Pick Running Shoes

Running is an exercise from which wonderful cardiovascular and aerobic benefits are gained. A popular choice for men and women, it can be done almost anywhere. Just as a carpenter requires the right tools for his trade, the right pair of running shoes is essential for both the casual and the serious runner. There are some things to consider when purchasing a running shoe.

- How far and often will you be running? If you are a casual runner (less than ten miles per week), then a basic running shoe will be fine. If you are training for a marathon, consider making a true investment in your running shoes for optimal performance.

- Consider the arch in your foot. Those with a high arch, need a running shoe with a curved shape. If you have an average arch, a semi-curved shoe might be the best fit. Those with a low arch or flat feet would need a straight shape shoe.

- Where will you be running? Most people run on pavement or sidewalks, so most running shoes are designed with this in mind. However, if you are going to be running on uneven or softer surfaces (such as mountain trails or grass), look at shoes intended for those kinds of surfaces.

- Shop for running shoes late in the afternoon, as feet are at their peak size at this time of day. When trying on the shoe, make sure there is a full thumb width between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Also, if a running shoe fits properly, the toe box will allow the toes to move freely. The heel should not slip or rub against the shoe and the sole should flex with ease where the foot flexes.

- Go to a store that specializes in running shoes or at least to a sporting goods store. The sales associates will be able to help you make a decision on the best shoe for you.

- If you run often, consider purchasing more than one pair of running shoes. This way, you can rotate them. And, if you run often, your shoes should be replaced ever six months or so.

- Do consider price so your budget isn’t blown, but don’t sacrifice comfort and durability in the process.

Runners have a wide selection of styles, colors and levels of comfort from which to choose when looking at running shoes. Remember, whether you are a casual runner or a serious runner, comfort and excellent support are essential for the best performance!
